Scapular Dyskinesia
Scapular Dyskinesia or ‘winging scapula’ results from a muscular imbalance in the postural muscles that act to keep the shoulder blade against the thoracic spine. This can result from injury, muscular weakness or nerve damage.
The disordered movement pattern of the shoulder blade may also cause other conditions in the shoulder such as impingement syndrome due to the stress it places on the tendons.
Our shoulder blade requires ordered movement to maximise muscle function and to allow us to complete overhead activities.
Physiotherapy treatment of this condition requires soft tissue manipulation and an individualised exercise programme to strengthen the weak muscles, reduce the activity of the muscles that are over active and restore a natural resting position of the shoulder blade.
